Screen printing and vinyl?
I want to start screen printing. Is it better to use permanent vinyl or removable vinyl to put my design on the screen? Also, can I screen print colours onto a black t-shirt or do I need to screen print the pattern in white, let it dry and then go back over in colour? Thanks 😄
Screen printing and vinyl crafting are two popular methods for creating designs on items like t-shirts, bags, and more.
Screen Printing Basics
Process
Involves creating a stencil (screen) and using it to apply ink on materials like fabric, paper, or wood.
Durability
Screen prints are known for their long-lasting and vibrant results, especially on fabrics.
Complexity
May require more setup and cleanup compared to vinyl, but allows for intricate designs with lots of detail and multiple colors.
Vinyl Crafting Basics
Process
Uses adhesive-backed vinyl sheets which are cut into shapes or letters using a machine like a Cricut or Silhouette, then transferred onto surfaces.
Durability
Vinyl designs are durable but might be less so than screen prints, especially if not heat pressed properly onto fabrics.
Flexibility
Great for creating bold, one-color designs quickly, and easy to apply on a variety of surfaces.
Tools and Materials
Screen Printing
Requires screens, emulsion, ink, squeegees, and a light source for exposure.
Vinyl Cutting
Needs a vinyl cutter, transfer tape, weeding tools, and adhesive vinyl sheets.
Both methods have unique benefits and can be chosen depending on the project needs and personal preferences. Happy crafting! 🎨✨

Print the Design
Use a sublimation printer to print your design on sublimation paper. Make sure to mirror the design before printing.
Set Up Your Heat Press
Preheat your heat press to the appropriate temperature, typically around 375-400°F (190-204°C), with a pressing time of about 60 seconds. Adjust as needed based on the specific materials and press being used.
Place the Design on the Wood Plank
Position the printed sublimation paper on the wood plank where you want the image to transfer. Secure it with heat-resistant tape to prevent any movement.
Press the Design
Carefully place the wood plank with the design in the heat press. Apply even pressure and let the press do its job for the set time.
Peel Off the Paper
Once the time is up, gently peel away the sublimation paper to reveal your design on the wood plank.
