I would definitely start with classes in ceramics. I did ceramics with my family a long time ago but the paint technique classes taught me so much. We went to one in Tennessee not sure If they still do them. We even got to watch how the artist creates the molds which was really neat. We just couldn't get it off the ground but I am considering trying it again.
You can actually start practising ceramics with very little! I recently started my ceramics journey with non-firing clay - a few companies specialise in this type of clay! :)
Getting started with ceramics is an exciting journey into the world of clay and creativity. Here's a list of essential items and steps to help you begin:
Basic Equipment and Materials
Clay
There are different types of clay such as earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Choose one based on your project needs.
Potter's Wheel
A wheel is not necessary for hand-building techniques but is needed for wheel-throwing pottery.
Tools
Basic tools include a wire cutter, ribs, sponges, trimming tools, and needles for shaping and smoothing the clay.
Kiln
To fire your creations, a kiln is essential. Some community centers offer kiln services if you don't have your own.
Glazes
Used to coat and add color to your pottery, providing a waterproof finish after firing.
Workspace
A clean and comfortable space to work on your pottery projects is crucial. Consider covering surfaces to protect them from clay residues.
Learning and Practice
Workshops or Classes
Taking a beginner's class can provide hands-on experience and foundational knowledge.
Online Tutorials
There are many free and paid online resources that can guide you through basic and advanced ceramic techniques.
